LORD, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders, Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
-Isaiah 25:1 (NASB)
God’s creation and planning, and the fulfillment of His Word, time and time again, reveal to us God’s foresight, diligence, meticulousness, and care for the small and mundane. It displays His integrity, commitment, and investment in His creation. He not only created us but also authored our lives, crafting and planning our stories.
When we view the Bible, we can say that God did this for them and planned it for them. We look at a prophecy and see how intricately it was woven into time and God’s plan for the future. We can see the beauty of God’s authorship from one book of the Bible to the next, and it unveils God's presence, patience, provision, and power in each.
In this devotional, I would like us to see that God has not yet finished narrating His Story. The book of Revelation did not end His authorship. He said that He began a good work in us, and He will see it to completion (Philippians 1:6). When we look at the Bible, we see that it is a book God authored and dictated through the hands and lives of many. He lets us know that it was given by inspiration for instruction, correction, and training, so that we would be equipped to do every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is a pretext for the work He continues to write in each of our lives.
A Story with Your Name
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me,
-Psalm 139:16
As each person’s life begins and ends, He is still authoring His story. One man wanted to argue the point that we are not the hero of the story, and although we are not, because if we were the hero of the story, we would see ourselves in each and every book of the Bible, and we do not, but we do see how God uses us. That we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14) and He's crafted purposes for us (Ephesians 2:10), and not just for those in the Bible, for us in the present, because He has not stopped narrating His story. The importance of knowing this and realizing that we are part of God's story is that He has a plan and a future for us, which has been written with just as much diligence, foresight, and detail as the stories of those who played supporting roles in the Bible.
To be clear, who is the hero, the main protagonist? Jesus Christ is woven into the text and the fabric of the universe from before the beginning, and He will still be there at the end (Matthew 24:35). Yet, we as His supporting characters have intricate roles to play, and God did not take lightly what He wanted us to do, so we should not take it lightly. We should not live our lives haphazardly, thinking they are without purpose or should be guided by man-devised plans (Proverbs 16:9). The things we've experienced, are the places we've gone, the people we've interacted with; they have all been intricately woven into the story of our God. For He gave us the precious role of becoming the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27).
The Word in the beginning
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
-John 1:1-5 (NKJV)
Since the beginning, God has been using His Word, [Jesus Christ made flesh (John 1:14) ], to create, establish, and orchestrate His initial plan for the universe. We know the entrance of sin made that which was once perfect deprived, that which was once immortal, destined for death. God, in His omniscience, foresaw the fall of man, and He provided the Word to overcome and restore. Before even creating the world, He prepared a Savior in His Son, Jesus Christ, the Word that was with Him and is Him from the beginning ( 1 Peter 1:19-20 and Revelation 13:8). He already planned and later had others to prophecy that He would send a Light that pierces the darkness in the lives of those who would receive Him (John 1:4-5) restoring humankind and again making them ready for divine purpose (2 Timothy 2:20-21).
Epistle of Christ
You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.
-2 Corinthians 3:2-3
We may not be the hero in the story, but He did author wonderful and empowering roles for us to play during our brief time on the scene. We are part of His Story; whether through our hands, lips, or toes, we play a role in advancing His narrative toward completion.
God did not lose His attention to detail or His penchant for forethought when it came to writing your story and creating your purpose. So, where does that leave us? Using the Word of God that has been written, we are prepared and trained to embody the character He has empowered us to have, and then we should faithfully fulfill the purpose He has chosen for us to complete, to His Glory and our benefit.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for caring about us so much that we are continuously in Your thoughts and plans. Help us to realize the value You have placed on us and the time You have given us on this earth. May we redeem it walking in the strength of Your Spirit, the wisdom of Your Word, and the strength of Your Love. We welcome you not only to author but also to narrate our story, creating the atmosphere and tone that motivate, empower, and sustain us to faithfully walk in Your character and purpose. In Jesus Name, Amen.
